Winter Weather Possible on Friday: Mixed bag of snow, ice, and rain
Winter weather could disrupt travel Friday as snow, ice, and rain mix descends on the area. Prepare for potential delays and stay tuned for updates.
We’re calling Friday a WFMY News 2 Weather Impact Alert day for the possibility of those winter weather disruptions. Here’s what we know now.
What We’re Tracking
For Friday, cold air will be moving in from the north and “locking in”. This is a key ingredient needed for any winter weather in the Carolinas. It appears that we’ll have that ingredient this time around with high pressure sending it our way from New England.
At the same time, moisture will be gathering and heading our way from the Gulf. This moisture will move into the cold air in our area Friday morning.
It could fall as a mixture of snow, freezing rain and sleet, and regular old rain. Those are the tougher details to nail down right now. This is just a first alert.

What Could Fall
Looking at the graphic below, we estimate that mainly snow will fall on Friday along the Virginia – NC state line and the surrounding counties.
In most of the Triad area, a mixed bag of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain is more likely. Snow would start, then mixing more with icy precipitation through the day and then rain.
Farther south, all rain is more likely. This would include Asheboro and south.

Main Points:
- Winter weather is possible in our area for the first time this season on Friday.
- The main impacts would be some slow or slippery travel Friday morning through afternoon if enough snow or ice fell.
- Too early to know exactly how much, but amounts should stay fairly light.
- Be ready for possible travel adjustments or slow-downs.
- Keep checking back for more updates.
