Holiday travelers brave a second day of snow on West Michigan roads
The second day of the snowstorm wasn’t easy for Thanksgiving travelers, some of whom drove in during the first round of snow on Wednesday.
I-94 was clear for anyone headed east or west, but a Winter Weather Advisory continued until 7 p.m.
On Sunday the snowfall totals reached double digits in several areas, and climbed higher throughout the day as lake effect precipitation moved in.
One family stopping to fill up in Mattawan said their drive from Lansing was clear until they moved further west.
“Once we started hitting Battle Creek, Kalamazoo area, the clouds darkened and a little more snowfall,” Josh LaFeve said.
Another couple had to head back from South Bend after the storm canceled a holiday flight out of town.
“Snow everywhere,” Charles Murthison said. “Ice was pretty bad. I mean, you couldn’t go but maybe two lights without seeing someone spun out.”
Van Buren County saw on-and-off snow throughout the day, with the weather mellowing out closer to the evening.
The long-lasting storm made for a long weekend for plow workers like Paul McFarland of KF Lawn Service, who has hardly stopped clearing parking lots since Saturday morning.
“Yesterday was a long day for me,” he said. “I started at 6 a.m. yesterday and stopped at 2:30 a.m. today.”
McFarland says he’s seen a number of stuck cars, which he says is standard for any amount of snowfall.
He asks drivers for their attention when plows are close to their vehicles.
“If we’re going somewhere, stay out of the way,” he said. “It’s not as easy to stop and start that thing as a car.”
Drivers tell us they’re happy with how crews have handled the roads, saying they’re the reason their snowy holiday weekend remains on schedule.
“I can tell you if they had not been out, then we would immediately have to turn around and come back,” he said. “So very gracious of them, I think they’re doing a great job.”
