ODOT Preps OKC Roads for Winter Weather: What to Know

OKLAHOMA CITY –Oklahoma’s Department of Transportation is getting ready for the Oklahoma City metro’s second round of winter weather this week.

In a news release from ODOT, the agency said its crews have been preparing since Tuesday for winter weather that is forecasted overnight Wednesday into Thursday.

How is ODOT preparing for winter weather?

• All of ODOT’s crews are on standby.
• Elevated bridges and surfaces have been treated with salt brine across the state.
• Trucks are loaded with salt and sand mixtures to help melt ice once it begins to form on roads.
• Additional trucks and materials are ready if needed.

What resources does ODOT have to keep roads safe?

• More than 500 multi-use trucks statewide.
• More than 1,800 employees statewide.
• More than 128,000 tons of salt and salt/sand mix stored across the state.

What do Oklahoma drivers need to know to stay safe?

Drive slow, stay alert, and allow extra space.
Don’t crowd plows, and don’t pass road-clearing equipment.
Be aware of “black ice.” Roads could look wet, but instead could be frozen.
